Back in 2016, we launched our identity and signature service under the domain smartid.ee, using the trademark “Smart ID.” From the very beginning, the platform gained traction—businesses loved how quickly and easily they could verify customer identities and enable secure document signing with just a few clicks.
What made it stand out? It worked seamlessly across borders with multiple strong electronic identification (eID) and eSignature methods, making integration both fast and reliable.
A New App on the Scene: "Smart-ID"
Just a few months later, also in 2016, the “Smart-ID” mobile app was released—a totally separate product created by SK ID Solutions. This innovative app brought Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) to mobile devices, meeting eIDAS standards without the need for a physical ID card.
The app quickly became a staple in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, with millions of users relying on it for secure authentication and signing. Today, nearly everyone in the Baltics knows and uses Smart-ID as a daily part of digital life.
Why the Name Change?
Because both services were operating under similar names, some confusion naturally followed—especially since Smart-ID (the app) and SmartID.ee (our API service) are completely different entities.
To eliminate this confusion and better reflect our growing global focus, we rebranded smartid.ee as eID Easy.
New name, same trusted technology—now with even broader coverage and more features.
