SIGNATURE EXTENSION

What is Signature Extension?

Signature Extension upgrades a digital signature to a higher assurance level, ensuring that it remains valid over time. Digital signatures start at Baseline-B, which relies on the signer’s computer clock and offers no reliable proof of time. By adding a qualified timestamp (baseline-T) and revocation information (baseline-LT), signatures gain long-term legal certainty.

For highly critical or archived documents, further upgrades to baseline-LTA ensure validity for decades by adding new timestamps and stronger cryptography as standards evolve. This process can be done during signing or applied later, even for signatures originally created outside eID Easy.

By default, eID Easy signatures are created at the baseline-LT level, giving you both timestamp and revocation protection. When long-term archiving is required, they can be easily extended to LTA for durability measured in decades.

Who is it for?

Where Long-Term Validity is Essential

Signature Extension is crucial in industries where documents must remain valid long after they were signed.

  • Government & public sector filings, tenders, or citizen records that require LT level or higher.
  • Legal & insurance contracts, claims, and case evidence that must hold up in court.
  • Accounting & finance ensuring annual reports, tax filings, and records stay verifiable for years.
  • Any organization that needs documents to remain provably authentic for decades.

By extending signatures to LT or LTA, organizations eliminate the risk of discovering that a previously valid document has become invalid due to certificate expiry.

How does it work

Turning Signatures into Long-Term Evidence

Extending a signature strengthens it by adding proof of time and validity. This process can be done during signing or applied later, even for signatures originally created outside eID Easy.

  1. Timestamping – a qualified timestamp locks in the exact moment of signing.
  2. Revocation check – OCSP/CRL data is added to prove the certificate was valid at that time.
  3. Periodic renewal – for baseline-LTA, new timestamps are applied over time, ensuring cryptographic strength for decades.

Validating and extending in this way means documents remain trustworthy not just today but also 10, 20, or 100 years from now.
