Signature Extension upgrades a digital signature to a higher assurance level, ensuring that it remains valid over time. Digital signatures start at Baseline-B, which relies on the signer’s computer clock and offers no reliable proof of time. By adding a qualified timestamp (baseline-T) and revocation information (baseline-LT), signatures gain long-term legal certainty.
For highly critical or archived documents, further upgrades to baseline-LTA ensure validity for decades by adding new timestamps and stronger cryptography as standards evolve. This process can be done during signing or applied later, even for signatures originally created outside eID Easy.
By default, eID Easy signatures are created at the baseline-LT level, giving you both timestamp and revocation protection. When long-term archiving is required, they can be easily extended to LTA for durability measured in decades.
“The partnership with eID Easy offers our clients a swift and easy solution to extend their services across the European continent. Everything needed is combined in one API, eliminating the need for multiple local integrations. This leads to lower costs and faster delivery.”
Signature Extension is crucial in industries where documents must remain valid long after they were signed.
By extending signatures to LT or LTA, organizations eliminate the risk of discovering that a previously valid document has become invalid due to certificate expiry.
Extending a signature strengthens it by adding proof of time and validity. This process can be done during signing or applied later, even for signatures originally created outside eID Easy.
Validating and extending in this way means documents remain trustworthy not just today but also 10, 20, or 100 years from now.
Unlike providers who issue only baseline-B signatures, eID Easy delivers baseline-LT level by default and makes upgrading to baseline-LTA seamless. We work with multiple timestamp providers, ensuring reliability even if one service is unavailable, and can apply extensions to both our own and external signatures.
With one API and one contract, you get a future-proof, multi-provider solution that keeps documents valid and trusted for the long term.
