About

The Finnish ID Card is a government-issued electronic identity document equipped with a microchip containing a Citizen Certificate.

This certificate enables secure electronic identification and digital signing, allowing users to access various e-services such as tax filing, healthcare portals, and official communications.

To utilize these features, users require a compatible card reader and software. The ID card is available to Finnish citizens and residents, including minors with guardian consent.

Compliance

The Citizen Certificate embedded in the Finnish ID Card includes a signature certificate that complies with the European Union's eIDAS Regulation.

This setup enables the creation of Advanced Electronic Signatures (AdES) and, when used with a Qualified Signature Creation Device (QSCD), can produce Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES).

These signatures are legally equivalent to handwritten signatures across EU member states.
