BankID is Norway’s leading electronic identity and digital signature solution, used by millions of individuals for secure authentication and signing of documents across banking, government, and private sector services.

Originally developed by the Norwegian banking sector, BankID provides a seamless and widely trusted digital identity experience via mobile apps, code devices, and personal credentials.

It enables users to verify their identity and apply legally binding electronic signatures from virtually anywhere, forming a critical part of Norway’s digital infrastructure.

Compliance

While BankID is not currently recognized as a provider of Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) under the eIDAS Regulation (EU) No 910/2014, it fulfills strict national requirements in Norway for strong electronic authentication and Advanced Electronic Signatures (AdES).

BankID signatures are legally binding under Norwegian law and are accepted for a wide range of formal transactions. The service is developed and maintained under strict supervision by Finanstilsynet (the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway) and complies with relevant national security, privacy, and trust service standards.
